Getting there

The archaeological site sits at the north end of the hotel zone. From town, La Veleta or Aldea Zamá it is about 15 minutes by scooter; less from the beach hotels. An e-bike works well too — the road is flat.

When to go

Arrive at opening time. Before 10 am there are fewer people, less heat and better light over the sea. Check the official hours before you go; they change with the season.

After the ruins

  • Playa Paraíso: minutes away, for a swim after the walk.
  • Caleta Tankah: cove, cenote and beach in one spot, about 15 minutes.
  • Gran Cenote: on the Cobá road, to cool off.

What to bring

  • Water, a hat and sunscreen: there is little shade.
  • Cash or card for the entrance.
  • Swimwear if you plan to hit the site's beach or Paraíso.
