Public beaches near the ruins
At the north end of the hotel zone, next to the archaeological site, are the public beaches that are easiest to reach from town, La Veleta or Aldea Zamá.
- Playa Paraíso: about 12 minutes by scooter. White sand, palm trees and calm water; the easiest one to swim and move on.
- Playa Pescadores: right next to Paraíso, with fishing boats on the sand. More local and low-key.
- Las Palmas and Playa Santa Fe: further north, inside the Parque del Jaguar area. Wilder and with fewer services; check the park's access rules before you go.
The hotel zone and its beach clubs
Heading south along the coastal road (Av. Boca Paila) are the hotels and beach clubs. Many ask for a minimum spend or a day fee to use sunbeds; ask before you sit down. The road is narrow and busy with people walking and cycling, especially at sunset: take it slow.
Our Tulum Beach shop is on Av. Boca Paila, handy if you are staying on the beach.
North along Highway 307
- Caleta Tankah: cove, cenote and beach in one spot, about 15 minutes away. Good for a full day.
- Akumal: about 25 km north, famous for the sea turtles in its bay. Access and snorkelling are regulated.
- Xpu-Ha: a little beyond Akumal, approx. 35 km. A wide beach; leave early and ride back in daylight.
Beach tips on a scooter
- Watch for loose sand at beach entrances: slow down.
- Park in visible spots, lock it and do not leave valuables in the trunk.
- Bring water and biodegradable sunscreen.
- Riding far on the 307? Keep right and get back before dark.
